Artist Andrew Farmer runs Doncaster-based Farmer Fine Arts with brother Matthew. He tells us why the online gallery – which specialises in pieces painted outdoors, ‘en plein air’ – stands out from the crowd.
“I was on the train with my brother, Matthew, when we got talking about starting our own online gallery. After numerous meetings over coffee and cake, we carefully selected artists to invite on our adventure, launching the gallery in 2016.
“Three things make our gallery stand out. The first is our love for 'plein air' painting - works created outdoors, directly from nature. The second is that we don't care for trends or fashions; we strive to showcase authentic works with a timeless quality. And the third is our intimate group of artists. We decided from the offset that we would keep the number to a minimum; this means we know the work inside-out and can speak confidently about each artist.
“Both Matthew and I studied art during our college years, after which I continued to the Royal Drawing School and Matthew took a route into business. He always felt the need to be involved in the art world, though, so setting up Farmer Fine Arts was perfect.
“We're planning to showcase a cross-section of our current portfolio at the fair, from contemporary abstraction to exquisite paintings made 'en plein air'. Since our artists have joined us, there’ve been many success stories and we can say hand on heart that any of the works on show would be a great investment.
“I’ve been collecting art for years. My most recent acquisition is a beautiful still life by Tom Stevenson, one of our own artists. The problem with running a gallery is that you’re constantly in contact with delicious works of art - and sometimes the temptation is too great. . .”
Farmer Fine Arts will be found on Stand C8 in the Large Hall. For more information go to farmerfinearts.com
