Mel Fraser is a Cambridge-based artist of immense creativity, sensitivity and natural ability. You will be able to see her work first-hand when you visit Cambridge Art Fair 2016 on the Sheridan Russell Gallery stands (C3, C4 & D4) in the Large Hall.
Completely self-taught, Fraser has honed her skills to a level where she has now been commissioned for work to go into Frank Gehry’s first residential block of flats in Hong Kong, residences in China and the USA as well as large scale work in international hotels. She has just completed a 3 year project to carve a figurative sculpture for the new headquarters of the GMB Union in Euston. Having just had work in the prestigious ‘On Form’ exhibition at Astell Manor in the Cotswolds Fraser is starting to make a mark on the art scene. Truly someone to watch out for.
Her abstract work is sublime and uses perfection of line and surface to play with light and shadow. Works that use glass-like alabaster that you can see your hand through; white carrera marble pieces that have lace edges and perfect balance; geometric forms of such precision it is hard to believe they are cut by hand. All of these form part of her abstract collection.
Her figurative pieces show such sensitivity and understanding of human forms and emotion. She is not afraid to push the boundaries of the stone and achieves with keenness of eye what many of the world’s leading stone carvers would envy.
Sheridan Russell Gallery discovered her at her Open Studios 15 years ago and have been her main gallery ever since. “We realised that we had stumbled across a rare talent and an incredibly dedicated and beautiful person. We have seen her grow and are expecting great things in the future.”
We look forward to seeing Mel's new work at the art fair.
