It's a really lovely and friendly fair too. I’m no art expert and I’ve never been made to feel as though that's a problem at all
Sarah Decent owns Modish on Green Street, the best shoe shop in Cambridge. She also has a branch in Saffron Walden. We featured Sarah’s story last year and it inspired this entire ‘Collector’s Stories’ section. In fact, people were recognising her at last year’s event after seeing her photograph in the fair guide, “I felt like a minor celeb!!”
The first time she visited Cambridge Art Fair, back in 2014, she bought a very beautiful painting called ‘The Lake’ by the well-known local Artist Tess Recordon, the top painting in the photograph above. This purchase was very spontaneous and unexpected. "I was wandering around, sipping wine and admiring all the fantastic art when it happened; I glanced up towards the stage and there it was- a painting so beautiful I stopped dead in my tracks." Although she didn't buy the painting on the spot, a quick phone call to the exhibitor the following Monday morning and the deal was done.
Sarah returned to the art fair in 2015 knowing that she would more than likely see something she liked. And there it was, on the stand of Hanoi Art House, a Vietnamese specialist- a painting by an award-winning Artist called Bui Trong Du. Sarah had a great conversation with Angie, the owner of the gallery. “Angie was very very friendly and knowledgeable. I almost felt as though I knew the artist by the time she'd finished describing him!” What attracted Sarah to the painting? “The colour, the simplicity of style… and I love birds!”
Having been to Cambridge Art Fair twice and having bought original art on both occasions, Sarah has a high opinion of the event. “I think it's fantastic- a brilliant combination of local and national artists, covering just about all genres and styles. It's a really lovely and friendly fair too. I’m no art expert and I’ve never been made to feel as though that's a problem at all!” Sarah already has around 15 pieces of original art at home so there is a good chance that we’ll see her again this year, hunting for that something special. If you see her there, don’t be afraid to ask her for her autograph…
