The Collectors- Jane Horwood
Jane Horwood is a web angel & designer, part of the Catfish Web Design team based in Cambridge. Jane has been acquiring original art for many years and her collection is now approaching 30 pieces. She particularly favours work by local artists such as the fantastic John Lyons, Ophelia Redpath, Renee Spierdijk and Gail De Cordova, all of whom are Cambridge Art Fair favourites!
Cambridge Art Fair launched in 2013 and Jane was there and has attended every edition since then. "I love the Art Fair. I think there is a diverse range of artworks on display which is great. I know a lot of local artists, but it’s great to discover new work. It is a very sociable event and it takes me ages to get around the exhibition as there are always so many people there that I know, and we end up discussing the work on show. It’s fascinating to see what other people are drawn to and purchase. I think this event is one of the highlights of the Cambridge year."
In 2017, Jane purchased 'Come Here & I'll Show You Something Beautiful' by Kate Boxer from The Art Hound Gallery. "I found it very compelling and mysterious. It makes me think of Angela Carter’s writing and Grimm’s Fairy Tales. I love the sense of movement in the piece and the childlike writing. There is a darkness to it, despite the bright colours. It’s a strong and powerful piece of art that I never get bored of looking at." She has since purchased another piece by Kate Boxer, called 'Dick Turpin On His Way To York'.
The buying experience at Cambridge Art Fair is always a pleasant experience. "Tom of The Art Hound Gallery provided me with a lot of information about the artist, her work in general and more specifically the piece I was interested in. I felt very comfortable and reassured by his knowledge." She doesn't really consider the investment side of art collecting. “I buy art to enjoy it. It would be nice to think that some of the pieces I have invested in will be collectible in the future. I go with my gut.”
Even with an already large collection, Jane is certain that she has plenty more space for new acquisitions and sometimes she'll unexpectedly find something at the fair that she can't resist. "A couple of years ago I invited some friends from London up to the Fair. We often go the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea together. My ‘Art Fund’ was rather depleted that year so I gave them strict instructions not to let me buy anything. While they were distracted purchasing Kate Moss by Mr Brainwash, I was around the corner sneakily buying a couple of Harry Bunce prints."
