Charity Partner: The David Parr House

13/9/2018

Comments

Picture
Cambridge is about to welcome a new hidden gem to its cultural offering. Next Spring David Parr House at 186 Gwydir Street will open to the public for the first time although a lucky few have already been through the front door. David Parr worked by day as an artist painter for the local firm of F R Leach & Sons, a Cambridge firm of artist decorators and craftsmen who created interiors for William Morris and other leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. He would return to his ordinary terraced house, and working by candlelight, he created an extraordinary interior for his own private enjoyment.

If you do anything, do it well.

David Parr

Volunteer-led tours will take visitors through the front door of the David Parr House and into each room of the remarkable house as the stories of the occupants’ lives are revealed. Displays of David Parr’s notebook, diaries, painting tools, photos and family audio recordings will illuminate the day-to-day life of the largely forgotten but talented and highly skilled artisans by exploring Cambridge’s social history, domesticity, the 20th Century home, memories and reminiscence.

In 1912, David Parr inscribed on his Drawing Room wall ‘If you do anything, do it well’. This sentiment has inspired the passionate private donors and dedicated volunteers who, over the past five years, have helped to save the David Parr House by conserving and restoring it, partly funded by a Heritage Lottery Grant.
Picture
We hope that all our visitors at Cambridge Art Fair 2018 enjoy visiting our stand to see objects from the house and collection on display, to meet some of the people who saved the house. To find out how to become a collections, garden, research or house guide volunteer please speak to us on the stand during the show.

With support from National Lottery players every £1 is doubled by Heritage Lottery Fund and Barclay will also match the first £1,000 donated at this year’s Cambridge Art Fair so, with Gift Aid, a Gift of £5 becomes £25, £10 becomes £50 and £50 becomes £250. That’s the kind of maths we like!

The David Parr House is currently seeking special people to become founding patrons. They will be offered their own personal experiences including handling special objects from the collection, meeting special guests, invitations to curatorial events and to see behind the scenes before and after the house is open to the public. All gifts and donations go towards building a £1m endowment so that art lovers can enjoy an annual programme of exhibitions, talks, special events and craft workshops.

Come along to the art fair 27-30th September at Quy Mill Hotel & Spa and find the David Parr House team on Stand F1. Tamsin Wimhurst, Chair of the Trustees of David Parr House will be delivering a FREE talk about the history and the future of this fascinating project on Friday 28th September at 4pm in the Wine Bar. At 5pm, straight after Tamsin's talk, there will be an Auction of Experiences to raise money for the project. This will also take place in the Wine Bar and all are welcome to attend.

The Champagne Bar is back for 2017!

10/10/2017

Picture
Cambridge Art Fair will feature it’s very own Champagne Bar again in 2017, thanks to an ongoing partnership with Cambridge Champagne Company, exclusive UK suppliers of Champagne Dominique Boulard.

Craig Kerrecoe, Managing Director of Red Dot Events Limited, the organisers of Cambridge Art Fair, said-

“We are very pleased to be working with Paul and the team at Cambridge Champagne Company again for 2017. The Cambridge Champagne Company brings an exclusive product that will appeal to the discerning visitors that come to the fair. We look forward to hearing what our visitors think of their fabulous Champagne.”

Dominique Boulard’s family have been tending their vines for over 200 years. Every grape is picked by hand, so neither fruit nor vine is damaged. Each of the three classic champagne grape varieties are grown on Boulard family land. His vines grow on a perfect south-facing slope of the Vallée de la Marne, in the Grand Cru village of Mailly, and in a hamlet called – aptly – Paradis.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the prestigious wine guides Hachette des Vins and Gault & Millau. Indeed Dominique’s champagnes have beaten in blind tests many of the more famous brand names.

The Champagne Bar will be in the Large Hall, between the doors through to the Small Hall, right the very centre of fair.

Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust Is Our Charity Partner for 2017

10/3/2017

Picture
We are proud to announce that Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT) is our Charity Partner for 2017.  ACT is dedicated to supporting innovation in patient care across Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals.

Whether it's treatment for an emergency, acute condition, pregnancy or long term illness, ACT believes that every patient deserves the highest quality of care available.

The hospitals have earned the reputation of being among the world's best academic healthcare organisations, and ACT's aim is to support those achievements by raising funds for cutting edge technology, additional specialist staff, environmental enhancements and extra comforts for patients that make all the difference over and above what is possible with NHS funding alone.

They also provide seed funding for early stage research projects, supporting the hospitals' clinical academics keen to embark on a research career. This funding then often leverages more ambitious research funding opportunities, and as such can be an essential component in identifying global cures and advances in treatment.

We look forward to working with Samantha and the ACT team over the coming months.

Elms Cambridge BMW is proud to sponsor the fourth edition of the Cambridge Art Fair

This wonderful event has quickly established itself as the flagship event for visual art in Cambridge and across the eastern region, attracting visitors from far and wide. Since the art fair’s launch in 2013, many thousands of people have experienced (and bought) an impressive variety of art ranging from Modern Masters like Picasso, Dali and Matisse, all the way through to exciting contemporary art by some of today’s best known artists, such as Tracey Emin, Sir Peter Blake and Damien Hirst.

"For those few days every year, we have the UK art industry at our disposal. It’s a tremendous resource and a very reassuring way of buying original art."

One of the things that makes Cambridge Art Fair such a valuable event for the region is the fact that so many dealers and galleries from around the UK and sometimes further afield, converge upon Cambridge for a few days every year.  They bring with them their portfolios of modern and contemporary original art, of course, but they also bring their immense experience, expertise and knowledge. For those few days every year, we have the UK art industry at our disposal. It’s a tremendous resource and a very reassuring way of buying original art.

Expertise, quality, masterpieces- these are all words that resonate with BMW.  This is why it was an easy decision for Elms BMW Cambridge to affiliate itself with the event.  As part of our sponsorship package, we have chauffered guests to and from the VIP Press Launch at Hotel Du Vin in our X6 model,  provided a new 7 Series model for the marketing photoshoot and demonstrated our i8 supercar model. at the same event.

We’ve also produced an i3 model  ‘art car’ using original artwork by Richard Friend, one of the contemporary artists represented by ReallyVeryNice on Stand D3 in the Large Hall.  This art car formed the basis of a social media ‘Spot The Art Car’ campaign.

Picture
With the BMW range now boasting more models than ever before,  finding the perfect BMW has never been easier.  With new cars, approved used cars, finance and leasing, service, repair and accessories, we’ve got everything covered.

We have a long tradition of sponsoring and supporting events and organisations in our community.  Elms Cambridge BMW continues to be a proud sponsor of Magpas,  the Emergency Medical Charity.  We’re delighted to continue to support Magpas in its life-saving work,  attending serious incidents across the region by helicopter or by car,  saving so many lives.  The team at Cambridge supply a BMW 5 Series Touring & BMW X1 to the charity,  which act as rapid-response vehicles,  attending emergencies across the east of England.

Once you’re finished browsing through the fair, why not view first hand some automotive art at Elms BMW Cambridge.  With several masterpieces of our own waiting to be experienced first-hand and a helpful team of experts on hand to offer guidance and advice,  you can be assured that whether it be at the art fair or our BMW centre,  you will receive the warm,  friendly Cambridge welcome that visitors have come to know and love.

We are very pleased to announce that ACT- Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust, is our official charity partner for 2016.

ACT is the only registered charity dedicated to supporting innovation in patient care across Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals.

Deputy Director of Fundraising, Samantha Sherratt, considers this partnership to be an important one. "We are delighted to be the charity partner for the 2016 Cambridge ArtFair; particularly as this year marks the hospital's 250th anniversary. It is such a special year for us."

"Although only in it's 4th year, the Cambridge Art Fair has quickly become a Cambridge institution. While Addenbrookes is clearly much older, we share some of the same ideals- to bring excellence to the city for the benefit of not only local residents but those further afield too."

Craig Kerrecoe, Managing Director of Red Dot Events Limited, the organisers of Cambridge Art Fair, agrees. "We are very pleased to be able to support this impressive and incredibly vital charity. Samantha and the team at ACT do such an important job providing funding for early-stage research projects. This funding often leads to more ambitious research opportunities and can be essential in identifying new cures and advances in treatment."

2016 Welcome Message- Community, Culture, Commerce

26/8/2016

Comments

Picture
This event supports independent galleries and art dealers from all over the UK and beyond by giving them opportunities to showcase their portfolios to buyers of art in the eastern region. This, in turn, supports the careers of all of the independent artists that they represent.

Community.  Culture.  Commerce.

Thank you so much for supporting the 4th edition of Cambridge Art Fair, proudly sponsored by Elms Cambridge BMW. As an attendee you will become a vital part of a process that contributes significantly to the local, regional and national economy, supporting hard-working independent businesses and the careers of talented artists.

If you have been to the fair before, you will already know that this event supports independent galleries and art dealers from all over the UK and beyond by giving them opportunities to showcase their portfolios to buyers of art in the eastern region. This, in turn, supports the careers of all of the independent artists that they represent.

Cambridge Art Fair also creates a high quality marketplace for buyers of art in the region, meaning that they don’t have to travel to one of the London art fairs in order to source the best work available- we have always worked hard to bring the best galleries and dealers to Cambridge and this year is no exception.

This beautiful city is not some far flung suburb of London and it warrants, in fact it deserves it’s own cultural offering and identity.  We are proud to be working with our many sponsors and partners to bring the best of the art industry to the region for one weekend each year.

The event also supports the local economy by generating thousands of visits to the city centre across the four day event, many of whom patronise the surrounding shops, cafes and restaurants during their visit.  The commercial sector in the region recognises the value of the event now: we are proudly supported by several high-quality businesses, meeting our goal of creating a bridge between commerce and culture, to the benefit of all involved.

Our thanks go to all of the wonderful businesses that have supported the event this year- Elms Cambridge, Mattioli Woods, Cambridge Live, Cambridge News, Cambridge Magazine, Hotel Du Vin, Cambridge Champagne, Puddini Caterers, Parrot Print, Cambridge Plants, Activ Canvas, Go Vocal Media, Cambridge TV, Majestic Wine, Local Secrets, The British Shop, Independent Cambridge, Connection Seating, Mama Bombon and our Charity Partner Addenbrookes Charitable Trust.  Your contribution to this event is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to all of our wonderful exhibitors for their continuing support of Cambridge Art Fair. As always, the smooth running of the art fair relies on the commitment and professionalism of our volunteers and staff.  We thank them all for their invaluable contribution- we simply couldn’t do it without them.

We hope you enjoy the art fair this year and find something beautiful that you can treasure for many years to come.

Thank you for coming.

Fine art meets technology at this year's Cambridge Art Fair as it becomes the first UK art fair to use an exciting new mobile app specially designed for the art industry.

Jamie McCallum, CEO of Art Retail Network Limited, the developers of the app called ActivCanvas® said, "I'm pleased to say that Cambridge will be the very first example in the world of ActivCanvas® technology being used by an art fair organiser to the benefit of their exhibitors and their respective art buyers."

The app will be trialled with a number of exhibitors at the fair as the developers seek to discover how attendees interact with the technology.

We are excited to be working with Jamie and the team on the trial of ActivCanvas® in 2016.

New Exhibitor: The Fry Art Gallery

24/9/2015

Comments

We are extremely pleased to announce that The Fry Art Gallery will be participating at Cambridge Art Fair this year, showing a selection of works from it's collection of modern art.

The Fry Public Art Gallery was opened in 1987 and houses an impressive number of paintings, prints, illustrations, wallpapers and decorative designs by artists of the 20th century and the present day who have local connections and have made a significant contribution to their field. There is an emphasis on those who for a variety of reasons settled in Great Bardfield between the early thirties of the last century and the death in 1983 of John Aldridge RA who had lived in the village for fifty years.

Edward Bawden RA who, with his friend Eric Ravilious, discovered Bardfield a year before the arrival of Aldridge and dominated the scene for almost four decades, is represented by nearly 600 items. The Gallery has also acquired work by Ravilious and his wife Tirzah Garwood, and by those other artists who came to the village during the second world war - Michael Rothenstein RA, and his wife Duffy (now Duffy Ayers), Kenneth Rowntree, & George Chapman. The collection also includes prints and paintings by Bawden's son Richard, and examples of the very varied work of artists who made their way to Bardfield in the 1950s - Marianne Straub, Audrey Cruddas, Sheila Robinson, Bernard Cheese and Walter Hoyle.

The Gallery was built in 1856 to house the collection of Francis Gibson, a local Quaker businessman, and the building passed by descent to the Fry family, who lease it to the Fry Art Gallery Society.

The Fry Art Gallery will be on the stage on Stand E1b. Click here to visit their website
