We are very excited to announce that Fernando Mario Paonessa, the internationally-acclaimed Italian sculptor, will be participating at Cambridge Art Fair 2017.
After graduating in Industrial Chemistry, Fernando moved to Rome where he obtained his diploma in sculpture at the School of Ornamental and Plastic Arts. He also attended the faculty of Art History at La Sapienza University in Rome. He is an intense activitist and cultural operator, founding and directing art magazines, such as 'Controcampo Culturale' and 'InformArti', publishing critical essays on Alberto Giacometti, Auguste Rodin, Francesco Mochi and many contemporary artists.
In 1997 he founded the artistic movement 'Concrezionismo' followed by the publication of the book on the movement published by IEDA of Rome. Fernando's works are in domestic and foreign public and private collections, with particular market penetration in Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Japan. He has also won numerous public and private competitions for monumental sculptures for squares, public and private institutions and religious institutes.
The following text is an extract from the 'Paonessa'-La concrezione della materia. Copyright IEDA 2011 by Maurizio Marini.
"Paonessa has always been characterised not only by the technical and material qualities of his work and his extreme honesty of expression, but also by a common denominator of conceptual rigour and 'form' in the Latin sense - that is, beauty. Although his artistic language is as complex as the man and artist himself, which interpenetrate, they are complex to an analogous extent...
So, in his bronze works, Paonessa presents the sense of his own life and culture. The molten, magmatic material solidifies and opens into draped forms which in turn become ravines, without however losing their etymological characteristics as aesthetic communication, engrossing even on the most reduced scale of their images...
Paonessa invites the observer to enter into and at the same time rationalize his peculiar concept of 'form', is what he defines as 'Concretionism'. The process of creating and forming in Concretionism is no other than the realization of an empirical-theoretical process, derived from the Latin term 'concretionem' Indeed, 'concretionem' means, literally, the mineral incrustations deposited by superficial sea or subterranean waters or hydro-thermal action, in a radial or concentric structure.
Concretionism, as Paonessa himself reminds us in his book, 'Concretionism', is matter that calls out and moves us to call out: it is harsh, unadorned matter, forced and overforced, marked by the dramatic contrast between volumes and empty spaces, fixed and forced to co-exist in destructed and de-composed structures, in precarious, precipitate, dynamic and indifferent forms of equilibrium."
